Introduction

Climate is a naturally changing phenomenon - that's what climate does. Even the ancients recognised this and divided the year up into four separate climatic seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. And they learned to deal with this.

The ancients were apparently smarter than us. Whereas they realised that climate was, in effect, the "will of the Gods" and they learned how to adjust - modern western civilisation believes that they are smarter than the Gods. Firstly, they believe that man is actually responsible for the moderate warming that has occurred since the end of the Little Ice Age around 1850. Like Chicken Little, they also believe that we are all going to burn up as a result of this moderate warming.

Secondly, they believe that since all of this is unequivocally true, then it follows that if we modify our behaviour and reduce our profligate lifestyles, we can turn back the clock on climate.

Historically, there is very little that is new in this - for the last 150 years the mainstream media has aided and abetted this nonsense, since a little bit of panic every now and then is good for newspaper sales. Every generation or so they rush from one side of the argument to the other. First it's Global Cooling, then it's back to Global Warming. There is a short history of this here.

In recent times, we have seen this argument being more and more driven by "scientists" - which in turn has given rise to the nonsense of "climate science". During the last Global Cooling episode in the 1970's, a number of "scientists" were advocating a number of far-fetched "solutions" to the problem of Global Cooling. These included:

  • melting the arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot
  • diverting arctic rivers
  • stockpiling food

and the list went on.

This time around, now that Global Warming is all the rage, the number of preposterous "solutions" being advanced range from the bizarre to the outright lunatic. And some people with some fairly serious scientific credentials are speaking out and being listened to on this subject.

The purpose of this blog is document some of these wacko ideas being advanced by "serious scientists" so that future generations can appreciate just how dangerously deranged western civilization became during this period - and have a few laughs into the bargain.
